MARGARET THATCHER

SPITTING IMAGE PUPPET RESTORATION

This is an original Margaret Thatcher Spitting Image puppet head which came to me from Michael Dixon who runs the National Puppet Archive and was then loaned to the V & A Museum as part of their ‘Laughing Matters’ exhibition.  She was in a very bad way with lots of her face having split and deteriorated. Her arms were in a terrible state so I undertook a lot of work restoring them to a better finish. There was a lot of slow rebuilding, re-sculpting and reinforcing areas to prevent further damage. I then had to colour match her to maintain the integrity of the piece. She did have to have some new eyelashes though.

I restored Mrs Thatcher to be sympathetic to its authentic condition, maintaining the original features and paint work and ageing the restored areas appropriately.
